MIDEAST PALESTINIANS ISLAMIC JIHAD PROTEST

epa02085822 Palestinian Islamic Jihad members chant anti Israeli slogans during a demonsration in the refugee camp of rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, 19 March 2010. The world's leading powers 19 March criticized Israeli plans to build a new Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem as they piled pressure on Israelis and Palestinians to resume stalled peace talks "as soon as possible." Addressing reporters on behalf of the so-called Middle East Quartet after a meeting in Moscow, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon spoke out against the illegal annexation of East Jerusalem and called on Israel to freeze all of its controversial settlement activities. The talks in Moscow took place against the backdrop of strained US-Israeli relations after the announcement of plans to build new Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem, and overnight Israeli bombing raids against targets in Gaza. Those raids came in response to a Palestinian militant rocket attack on Israel which killed a Thai kibbutz worker on 18 March. EPA/MOHAMED SABER

epa02085824 An Israeli soldier arrests a Palestinian demonstrator during clashes following Friday prayers in the West Bank town of Hebron, 19 March 2010. Senior Fatah official Mohammed Dahlan on 19 March said the party "does not seek a third intifada," after continuing unrest in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Dahlan, a member of the central committee of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah faction and the ousted head of Fatah in the Gaza Strip, spoke amid rising tensions that have seen hundreds of young Palestinians clash with Israeli police in East Jerusalem in recent days. The images of Palestinian youths throwing stones at Israeli armoured personnel carriers had led many in the region to speak of the possibility of a "Third Intifada," or a third uprising.
